    Defense Logistics Agency

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii - The Defense Logistics Agency touches every military operation in the Pacific, and representatives of the agency should always strive to tell customers “yes,” the agency’s director told DLA military members March 14 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

“You’re the ones who are out here talking to the customers, and you know what they need. If it makes sense, it’s fair and reasonable, and it’s not illegal, unethical or physically impossible, you should always be inclined to say yes,” Navy Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek said during a breakfast with uniformed personnel.

The admiral said he expects the DLA mission in the Pacific to grow even as the military services become smaller.

“The services are almost completely out of buying their own inventory and putting it in industrial sites. We’re now not just wholesalers; we’re now doing flight line and industrial support. We’re doing things we didn’t do before, and we’re getting those missions because we do them well,” Harnitchek said.

The agency has to maintain and build upon that reputation and continue to build trust between the services and the agency as new missions come along, Harnitchek said.

The director echoed his message of meeting and exceeding customer expectations throughout the day as he met with DLA Pacific senior leaders and employees. During a senior-leader roundtable discussion, Harnitchek urged the audience to continue looking for better, more efficient ways of doing business without losing sight of the customers’ needs.

“We’re saving a lot of money in many areas, and everyone has to do their part, but out here with our customers and combatant commanders, we have to make it happen,” he said.

Following the roundtable discussion, Harnitchek toured a number of facilities, including the DLA Pacific Headquarters building where a military construction project to convert warehouse space into offices is expected to begin in April.

Administrative and small operations functions for DLA Document Services, DLA Distribution Mapping and DLA Troop Support are located outside the headquarters complex at various locations around Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, but the planned construction will allow these functions to be collocated within the headquarters building, said Calvin Yamane, staff director for DLA Pacific Installation Support.

The director also visited DLA Distribution Pacific warehouses and met team members assigned to DLA Maritime Pearl Harbor. He praised the work being done to keep the distribution warehouses clean, neat and well organized.

“There’s some great work being done here. Good leaders learn from people like you,” he said to the employees who conducted the tour.

The day concluded with a DLA Energy Pacific briefing on the Army’s 505th Quartermaster Battalion bulk fuel mission on Okinawa, Japan. DLA Energy will assume the “receive, store and issue” operations and strategic bulk fuel mission from the battalion in March 2013.

“We’ve accomplished a lot, but there is still a lot left to do,” said Navy Capt. John Henderson, DLA Energy Pacific commander. “We’re still working force protection, hiring actions and other issues, but we’re absolutely on track to get this transfer done on time, and we have everyone engaged who needs to be engaged. We’ll continue providing updates to ensure we stay on track.”
