ALBANY, Ga. - Although many Marines and sailors spend a portion of their careers in a logistics command, the broad spectrum of logistics in the Marine Corps remains a mystery for some of them.

Service members with Combat Logistics Battalion 8, 2nd Marine Logistics Group had the opportunity to visit Marine Depot Maintenance Command aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Ga., March 14 to increase their knowledge on the logistics system.
“If you want to learn about logistics in the Marine Corps, this is the place to go,” said Staff Sgt. Bruce L. Quintin, a platoon sergeant with CLB-8.

“Here is where logistics happen at the highest level.”

The troops learned about the depot’s mission, which consists of supply, maintenance and distribution of gear to all units across the Marine Corps.

“All of our equipment comes here, gets fixed here, and it’s distributed from here to all the different units around the [Marine Corps],” Quintin said.

The visit included periods of military instruction about the Distributions Management Center and the Weapons Storage Unit, which were taught by workers at the facilities. It also included a tour through the vehicle assembly line.

“It was a great experience,” explained Cpl. Walter W. Carela, a motor vehicle operator with CLB-8. “I didn’t have any idea where all of our gear comes from or where does it go to get fixed.”
The tour took the troops deep into some of the multiple warehouses where they got to see step-by-step how civilian workers dismantle and assemble each vehicle.

Touring the installations served as an eye opener for the troops who got to see how civilian contractors dedicate themselves to delivering the best piece of equipment to service members.

“One of the things I noticed is everywhere you look, even in the restrooms, they have posters that say ‘every piece of gear saves a Marine’s life,’” Carela said. “That really motivates me and makes me more confident about the gear I use and the vehicles I drive.”

Carela concluded saying this experience is priceless and it will help him and his fellow Marines and sailors in their future careers when mentoring subordinates.
