BALKH PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Afghan National Army engineers, mentored by U.S. Army Embedded Training Teams, show steady improvement while conducting their tactics, techniques and procedures in Regional Command-North, Afghanistan.

The ANA soldiers of the 209th Engineer Corps learned the latest skills to conduct route clearance and heavy equipment operations, from the ETTs of Task Force Roughneck, TF Sword.

“We’ve always had a problem transporting our equipment,” explained ANA Sgt. Gul Ahmad with the 1st/209th Route Clearance Company. “Now, we’ll have enough qualified drivers to move our equipment from place to place. We’re very grateful for the Americans’ time and efforts to help us. We were in need of this technical training.”

ANA 1st Lt. Jamakhan with the 1st/209th Route Clearance Company said he and the ETT members decided to reduce a heavy transport driving class from 24 ANA soldiers to eight of his best drivers. He said he wanted the ETT members to conduct a thorough class with plenty of hands on training so those eight could turn around and be instructors for his unit.

ANA Sgt. Habibullah, a combat engineer with the 3rd/209th Route Clearance Company explained that he appreciates the ETT’s time and is eager to learn how to operate his unit’s latest equipment and how to perform the new techniques. He said he was chosen for the class so he can pass on the knowledge to his fellow soldiers.

“I am able to teach others what I have learned,” said Habibullah. “We are happy they are training us. There are many things we must learn. There are weapons, robots and devices we need more training on.”

U.S. Army Capt. Neal Litton with TF Roughneck, TF Sword, the partnership officer of Regional Command-North, said the feedback he gets from the ANA engineers have all been positive.

“Progress is going well,” said Litton. “We will soon conduct combined missions which will lead them to independent missions. The ultimate goal is to leave Afghanistan and have
the ANA engineers in total control of their construction projects, freedom of movement and security of Afghanistan.”
