Story by Staff Sgt. Wilson Rivera

    359th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade

FORT GORDON, Ga. – Striving to be named the best warrior in the 335th Signal Command (Theater), soldiers competed above the standard in fitness, warrior tasks, field training, and combatives during the Best Warrior Competition held, March 9.

The soldier and non-commissioned officer winners, will move on to compete against other commands at the U.S. Army Reserve Command 2012 Best Warrior Competition at Fort McCoy, Wis., from July 14 - 21. Winners there will continue to compete at the Department of the Army level against soldiers and NCOs from major commands around the world for the title of best warrior.

Winner in the soldier level is Spc. Michael Swan, with the 326th Chemical Company, 415th Chemical Brigade, Greensville, N.C. Winner for the NCO level is Sgt. Stanley G. Garrastazu, 4th Joint Communication Squadron, Joint Communication Support Element (Airborne), McDill Air Force Base, Fla.

“After winning this competition, I plan to prepare more and get feedback from all the sergeants major,” said Garrastazu. “I was expecting to do really well, even though I was nervous about the board.”

The three-day competition included an early morning Army Physical Fitness Test, a timed 10-Kilometer road march with 35-pound rucksack and weapon, warrior tasks training skills, land navigation course, combatives, and an appearance in front of a board with sergeants major from throughout the command and 335th SC(T) Command Sgt. Maj. James Preston, president of the board.

“Why do you think you should be the best warrior?” Preston asked each competitor.

“I think, I have what it takes to compete at the next level, physically and mentally,” Swan told the president of the board.

The 2011 winner of 335th SC(T) Best Warrior Competition in the NCO category, Sgt. Christopher R. Couchot, continued on to represent the command by winning the USARC Best Warrior Competition and going up against the best from around the Army.

With another level of competition ahead, Swan looks toward more challenges and studying to step his training up in preparation by June.

“I love this stuff,” he said. “Up and down hills, I thought the ruck-march is always tough because you don’t know how far the finish is from where you are.”
