FORT STEWART, Ga. – Informational packets, note pads and pens blanketed the table inside the ‘Vanguard’ Conference Room, Feb. 28-29, during intensive brigade-level Army Family Action Plan working groups attended by soldiers, spouses and DA civilians associated with the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.

The volunteers attended the working groups to address issues affecting current and future members of the Fort Stewart, Ga., Army community.

Traci Wheeler, the 4th IBCT Family Readiness Support Assistant, said AFAP working groups are usually offered once a year at the installation-level; this year, however, Wheeler said members of each brigade’s Army community will be able to voice their concerns to a variety of Army leaders.

“[By conducting the working groups at] a lower level I think you get more of a perspective,” Wheeler said. “We have different demographics coming into the room— [there are] a lot of people who are delegates. It’s nice to get the word of all the lower-enlisted [soldiers] as well as the senior-enlisted and new officers. Different perspectives bring a different dynamic into the group.”

Wheeler said members of the working groups addressed a variety of issues, including the transferability of educational benefits to dependents, and the need for the resurgence of the Total Army Sponsorship Program.

Spc. James Persinger, a fire support specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th IBCT, said participating in the working groups was a good experience.

“It gives [soldiers like me] a chance to speak [my] mind,” Persinger said. “It also gives us a [chance] to bring our points up and say ‘Hey, this is what we think.’”

Wheeler said concerns discussed at the working groups will be addressed at various levels; she said installation-level issues will be sent to the division and garrison commanders, and Army-wide issues will be sent to U.S. Army Forces Command and the Department of the Army.
