Renovations to school help children prepare for the future

FORWARD OPERATING BASE DEHDADI II, Afghanistan – The 378th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the reopening of the Abuzaid High School Feb. 16 here.

Students, teachers and village elders of the Dehdadi district were all smiles as they witnessed the reopening of the school.

“Today is an exciting day we are very proud to be able to help the children of this local community,” said Lt. Col. Vivian E. Gaz, commander of the 378th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade.

Education is important for today and more importantly for the future. Without education it’s very difficult for people to improve themselves and do better with their lives, Gaz added.

The project started around four months ago when the decision was made to renovate the school because it was not adequate for teaching and a possible hazard for the students and staff.

“Most of the teaching was conducted outside due to debris falling from the ceiling because the roof was in bad shape,” said Adriel Roberson, the Commanders Emergency Response Program officer for the 378th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.

The roof was redone and a new building was constructed because of the shortage of classrooms for all the students. With the new building, the school went from eight classrooms to 32 to help accommodate more than 2000 students and 75 teachers.

“We hope the opening of the newly renovated school will help energize the DehDadi district in the educational system because it now provides students an actual chance to focus on education,” said Roberson.

Some other things government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan did with assistance from the 378th CSSB was help coordinate the placing of new chalk boards and desks in the classrooms and issue new school supplies for the students and teachers.

“We hope the school and equipment will help the students be able to grow and learn more,” Gaz said.
