Afghan National Army’s 2nd Forward Support Depot receives parts

KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - The Afghan National Army’s 2nd Forward Support Depot on Camp Hero in Kandahar province received its first shipment of vehicle repair parts, categorized as class IX parts, Feb. 22. The parts were requested using the MoD-14 process, a Ministry of Defense supply system.

According to U.S. Army Reservist Capt. Jake Wilson, a Lexington, Va., native and the 2nd Forward Support Depot senior mentor, class IX parts have been hard to obtain because of a few challenges.

“Demand for class IX is high, but parts at the FSD are very low,” said Wilson. “Almost all of the class IX requests have to go to Kabul to be filled. Once approximately every 50 days, the Central Movement Agency in Kabul will then deliver fulfilled requests to FSD by convoy.

Despite the relatively lengthy turnaround time, the delivery is proof of an operational system.

“The delivery of 52 pallets of supplies is significant because it shows the demand process working through all levels of the Afghan National Army; from the local or tactical level, all the way up to the national or strategic level,” said Wilson.

“Establishing a functioning demand based system is a key enabler to complete transition to the Afghan National Security Forces,” added Wilson. “This is critical to the sustainment of the ANA.”

Afghan national army soldiers in the 2nd Forward Support Depot are in the process of filling their class IX authorized stock list, which contains almost 4,000 different parts.

The Forward Support Depot services ANA units in southern Afghanistan.
