BAGHLAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan Local Police drove off insurgents and recovered 13 improvised explosive devices in Baghlan-E-Jadid district, Feb. 18.

The ALP were on a routine night patrol when several individuals were moving through nearby fields and reacted with hostility when the ALP asked them to identify themselves.

After the insurgents opened fire, the ALP returned fire and a lengthy firefight ensued. Eventually, the ALP were able to drive back the insurgent force, who retreated into the nearby mountainous terrain.
Afterward, the ALP searched and recovered 13 mortar rounds that had been modified to perform as IEDs. The IEDs were turned over to coalition special operations forces to safely destroy.

A coalition special operations forces advisor talked about how proud the ALP commander was about his men recovering the IEDs and preventing any civilian injuries or casualties.

“Who knows how many lives were saved, how many women and children spared serious injury because the ALP recovered these IEDs before the insurgents could emplace them,” the coalition special operations forces advisor translated.
