BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – “Going live in 10 ... 9 … 8 … 7 … 6 … 5 …” and so it began. The nominees for the 84th Academy Awards were announced before the sun rose on the West Coast Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012. Tom Sherak, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence announced the nominees during a live news conference held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater here.
Sherak, a Vietnam- era veteran began the announcements by revealing the five nominees for best performance by an actress in a supporting role. Lawrence, who received a best actress nomination for her role in "Winter's Bone" during last year’s Academy Awards, followed suit by announcing the nominees for best performance by an actor in a supporting role, which included Nick Nolte for his role in “Warrior,” where he portrays a recovering alcoholic who trains his ex-Marine son for a Mixed Martial Arts tournament. Overall, nominees for 10 of the 24 categories were revealed during the broadcast, and the 400 international media representatives in attendance let a cheer of joy escape when their favorite nominees were announced.
Among the nominees announced for best documentary and best documentary short subject were “Hell and Back Again” and “Incident in New Baghdad” respectively. “Hell and Back Again,” winner of two Sundance Film Festival awards, is a full-length documentary covering four weeks in Helmand Province with Company E, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, as they fought village to village as part of the largest air assault mission since the Vietnam War. “Incident in New Baghdad,” winner of the Tribeca Film Festival in the same category, recounts the life-changing experiences of a U.S. Army veteran during his service in Iraq in July 2007.
“Hugo” led with 11 nominations, and “The Artist” followed with 10 nominations. In addition to “Hugo” and “The Artist”, “The Descendants,” “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” “The Help,” “Midnight in Paris,” “Moneyball,” “The Tree of Life,” and “War Horse” were also nominated for best motion picture of the year making this year the first time in academy history that nine films have been nominated in this category.
“War Horse” is a tale of a young boy’s horse that is sold off to the British cavalry and goes to war in what became World War I. After several years, the horse and his former owner are reunited in theater when both are being treated for injuries sustained on the battlefield.
The 84th Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented Feb. 26, at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
