FORT KNOX, Ky. – Kentucky First lady Jane Beshear, joined members of the Hardin Memorial Hospital staff, Dec. 6, to pack care packages for members of the 233rd Transportation Company.

Beshear participated in the event as part of her initiative with the Military Spouse Task Force for Kentucky, which highlights issues facing military spouses.

Beshear, who also took time to produce handwritten thank you messages to soldiers, was thankful for the opportunity to be able to provide a piece of home for the soldiers.

“As long as someone is stationed in the state of Kentucky, we consider them a Kentuckian,” said Beshear. “Anything we can do for them or their families, we want to make sure they know we appreciate their service. We want to do everything that we can to make their time in Kentucky the very best.”

HMH has been sponsoring the 233rd Trans. Company since August and have sent nearly 4,000 pounds of goods to the soldiers deployed to Kuwait in support Operation New Dawn.

The items collected for the care packages were donated by the many staff sections within HMH and include food products and personal hygiene items.

The 233rd Trans. Company leadership said that even though the soldiers appreciate the items, they were more excited to know that they’re being supported for what they do.

“I think our soldiers appreciate the love they’ve received from Hardin Memorial Hospital more than anything,” said Capt. Carmen Peyton, the 233rd’s rear detachment commander. “Everyone at Hardin Memorial Hospital has been very supportive of our soldiers, and as a result, our soldiers have been very appreciative.”

Michelle Murphy, director of marketing and public relations at HMH, said that the hospital’s care package drive will continue throughout the 233rd’s entire deployment. Most of all, Murphy said that she was proud of the support they’ve received from their employees.

“We take care of Fort Knox because Fort Knox takes care of us,” she said.
