PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Danish Brig. Gen. Henrik Larsen, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan senior military adviser, visited Provincial Reconstruction Team Paktya members to discuss current and future partnership initiatives within Paktya province, Nov 29.

UNAMA is a political UN mission established at the request of the government of Afghanistan to assist Afghans in laying the foundations for sustainable peace and development.

Henrik came to see firsthand how his organization partners with PRT representatives. This international partnership is key to assisting Afghan government officials in building capacity and sustaining development gains long-term.

“It is nice to see concepts we discuss daily in Kabul really put into action at the provincial level,” Henrik said.

The meeting provided an open forum of discussion on specific areas where international initiatives are showing tangible progress, for the Afghan government and the people of Afghanistan.

As international partners gradually shift focus from a direct assistance model, ultimate success is dependent on facilitating Afghan provincial officials’ engagement of the national budgetary and development processes. This increases their ability to deliver resources and progress at the provincial and district levels. UNAMA and the PRT play a direct role in fostering these relationships.

“This endeavor is a real team effort, and we could not be successful without strong partners like UNAMA,” said U.S. Air Force Col. James Forand, PRT Paktya commander, from Auburn, Mass.
