    Marine Corps Air Station Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. -- Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 4 received its first sergeant major during an historic appointment ceremony on the station parade field, Wednesday, Nov. 16.

Sgt. Maj. Robert W. Hinzman, 41, a Becklew, W. Va., native, accepted the daunting role of being the new senior enlisted advisor for the squadron.

“It’s exciting,” said Hinzman, whose previous unit was 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment. “Very exciting, this is my first unit as acting sergeant major and I’m already impressed by what I’ve seen. While most reserve units have a ratio of around one active duty Marine to about 40 reserve Marines, VMU-4 is going to have a much smaller ratio. This means that the Reserve Marines are going to have a much larger experience pool to draw from.”

However, due to the squadron being a reserve unit, Hinzman is also a reservist. This has challenges of its own.

“The greatest challenge I’m going to face is going to be distance,” said Hinzman. “My home and job is on the East coast, while the squadron is on the West. This just means that we’re going to do more communication via electronic and telephonic means.”

Being a UAV squadron, VMU-4 brings tremendous assets to the battlefield and commanders in the field.

“Being deployed last year in Sangin providence, Afghanistan, I was exposed to the amazing capabilities of the UAVs,” said Hinzman. “The UAVs offer an unparalleled advantage when trying to conduct surveillance, recon and during engagements. I’m proud to be able to lead Marine who are going to be filling such a vital role.”
