JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. – A pleasant autumn day was the backdrop as a family of vampires leered at a crowd of zombies, werewolves, witches, fairies and other creatures. The menacing visage of Michael Myers stared into the distance as the Pink Ranger walked past him, holding a kitten. A gangster dressed in a pinstriped suit and wielding a Thompson submachine gun walked beside a princess.
Though it may sound otherworldly, all of this took place right here on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, as the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division Family Readiness Group celebrated Halloween by hosting its third annual “Trunk or Treat” event, Oct. 29.
The parking lot of the brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company was filled with cars, trucks and even tactical vehicles decorated in spooky fashion. Children went from vehicle to vehicle, enjoying the decorations and trick-or-treating in a safe environment.
“It’s a great way for families to come together, and it’s especially important now that the brigade is about to deploy,” said Lt. Col. Lisa Crooks, rear detachment commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, I Corps, and also the FRG advisor for 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment.
An event like this one gives soldiers and their family members an opportunity to exercise their creativity. One vehicle had a “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” theme, as many children discovered for themselves when Leatherface jumped out, revving a chainsaw.
There was more than just candy and decorations, however. Individual battalions within the brigade organized their own attractions. Visitors could exercise in style by jumping around inside a bounce house, eat free fried chicken and popcorn, experience a bit of Army life by climbing inside a Stryker static display, or test their nerve inside a small haunted house.
The haunted house turned out to be a spooky favorite, as those who had the courage to enter the dark, creepy tent and brave its undead inhabitants were rewarded with candy.
“I like the candy a lot, but I liked the haunted house best,” said Mackenzie Bashore, 9-year-old daughter of Staff Sgt. Brandon Bashore, a Soldier with C Troop, 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment.
