MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. -- The Secretary of the Navy has designated November as Warrior Care Month to recognize the sacrifices and achievements of our wounded, ill and injured service members, their families and those who care for them.
“Warrior Care Month is a Navy and Marine Corps-wide effort to increase awareness and understanding of wounded warrior programs and services available to Navy and Marine Corps service members and their families, government and non-government partners, and the American public,” Secretary Ray Mabus said in his message to all Department of the Navy personnel today.
The United States Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment is celebrating Warrior Care Month for the third year.
“During November we are highlighting what our outstanding WII Marines and sailors, families and staff do on a regular basis,” said Col. John L. Mayer, commanding officer, WWR. “To us, every month is Warrior Care Month and being actively involved in the recovery and transition of our WII service members is our priority.”
This year’s theme is “Unleashing Unlimited Potential, Healing a Wounded Warrior’s Mind, Body and Spirit.”
“This year’s theme demonstrates that our leadership knows that true recovery encompasses the mind, body, spirit and family,” said Mayer. “Everything we do as a Regiment for wounded, ill and injured Marines focuses on these lines of operation. It’s critical that when a Marine returns to full duty or transitions to civilian life that he or she is prepared, not just medically, but physically, mentally and emotionally. This includes the well being of a warrior’s family. Our mission is to provide the leadership and environment to ensure this happens.”
The WWR will celebrate Warrior Care Month several ways this year.
During the first week of November, the Regiment hosted an adaptive sports camp for WII Marines and Marine veterans in Colorado Springs, Colo. This camp, which focused on the sport of shooting, is one of a seven-sport camp schedule operated by the Regiment’s Warrior Athlete Reconditioning program. The WAR program provides athletic support for WII Marines in order to show the benefits of sport in the recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration process.
The WWR continuously strives to highlight the accomplishments of the recovering Marines and veterans it supports and increase awareness of the assistance it offers to active, reserve and veteran Marines, and sailors attached to Marine units. The Regiment just launched its first-ever E-newsletter, which will help the Regiment communicate with the Marines and Marine veterans it serves, caregivers, staff members and government and non-government supporters. “This E-newsletter is another way I can communicate with WII Marines and Marine veterans, their families and our staff spread across our many locations throughout the globe,” said Mayer.
Wounded, ill and injured Marines and staff assigned to the WWR will participate in a wheelchair basketball exhibition game with military leaders, Nov. 18, at the Pentagon. This event will give WII Marines a chance to interact with those who support them in a different way in addition to introducing them to other WII service members and staff from the other services.
The WWR provides and facilitates non-medical care to combat and non-combat wounded, ill, and injured Marines, and sailors attached to or in direct support of Marine units and their family members in order to assist them as they return to duty or transition to civilian life. The Regi-mental Headquarters element, located in Quantico, Va., commands the operations of two Wounded Warrior Battalions located at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Camp Lejeune, N.C., and multiple detachments in locations around the globe.
