EL PASO, Texas - The 4th Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment had over 60 soldiers train for the upcoming Expert Infantry Badge competition on a three-day field exercise starting Oct. 25.

Pfc Al Wortmann, B Company 4/17th Inf. Regt., said, “The Expert Infantry Badge is our test to show if we know the standards, and see if we can progress as fast as we can. As infantry men, we have to be able to shoot and qualify with a rifle. We have to make sure we can run for standard; because in combat situations you are going to need every aspect you got.”

“I am looking forward in to getting the EIB because I am an expert infantry man,” said Pfc Carlos Garnica, B Company 4-17th Inf. Regt.
The EIB was first created in October 1943. Currently, it is awarded to U.S. Army soldiers who hold infantry or special forces military occupational specialties.

To be awarded the EIB, the soldier must complete and pass a battery of graded tests on basic infantry skills; usually the testing phase is the culmination of weeks of training. The soldiers must pass the Army Physical Fitness Test with at least 75 points in all events according to the candidate’s age group. Then, complete a day and a night land navigation course. They must shoot an “expert” qualification on their assigned weapon. Finally, they are required to complete a 12-mile road march within three hours.

“The Expert Infantry Badge is our test to show if we know the standards, and see if we can progress as fast as we can, said Pfc Al Wortmann, B Company 4-14th Inf. Regt.

“I’m planning on excelling on the weapons portion of the EIB competition due to the fact that I have been the unit armorer for the past 3 years,” said Spc Fred Roscoe, B Company 4-17th Inf. Regt. “I have a vast majority of knowledge toward the weapons field.”

The EIB test is administered on average once per year with pass rates usually near ten percent, depending on the unit conducting testing.

The “Buffalos” will compete with Division for the EIB in December 2011.
