KUNDUZ PROVINCE, Afghanistan - The Afghan elders of Imam Sahib district held a shura validating the district’s newest Afghan Local Police program, Sept. 28.
District elders hosted the event with assistance from the coalition Special Operations Force team members who will provide the initial training for the ALP
Numerous Afghan government officials attended the event, including Provincial Gov. Mohammed Anwar Jegdarek, District Gov. Amunuddin Quraishi, the 303rd Afghan National Police zone commander, Lt. Gen. Baba Jan, Kunduz Provincial chief of Police Maj. Gen. Samiullah Qatra, and the Ministry of the Interior ALP lead, Brig. Gen. Ali Shah Ahmadzai.
During the opening comments, Jegdarek highlighted the accomplishments of the province in improving security, and assured the crowd that they would continue on that path.
“We are going to showcase to the rest of Afghanistan and the world that Kunduz is an example of development and security,” he said.
Official speakers reminded the elders present of the local connection the ALP would have to the people and stated the important responsibility the elders held in the selection of the ALP. They also emphasized the significance of having their brothers and neighbors protecting them.
“It is the decision of the elders to allow a man to become ALP. Not the province, not the national government, not the United States Special Forces,” Ahmadzai stated.
The first class of approximately 30 ALP candidates will begin training in the next few days.
