NAPLES, Italy - Rear Adm. James Foggo, deputy commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, spoke to Naples sailors of the quarter during a United Service Organizations lunch on the Naval Support Activity in Naples, Italy, Oct. 24.

During the event, 25 sailors from area commands were recognized for their selection as top performing sailors of the quarter.

As part of their recognition, Foggo took a moment to speak to the sailors and reflect on how much has happened since he attended the event last year.

“We have gone through major combat operations and supported more ships in our theater than I have seen in a decade, and it is all driven by people like you,” said Foggo.

Foggo spoke about leadership and thanked the sailors for their accomplishments before telling a story about Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Rick West.

“When I was stationed on USS Sea Devil back in 1983, I remember a young Quartermaster of the Watch, Petty Officer 2nd Class Rick West. He was one of those hard charging sailors just like some you here today,” said Foggo. “I am very proud to say I serve in the U.S. Navy with that fine Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, but I still think of him as the guy that kept me safe when he was standing Quartermaster of the Watch aboard USS Sea Devil.”

Each quarter, the Naples-area USO recognizes the sailors of the quarter for their hard work in the region.

The commands recognized were U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet; Allied Joint Force Command Naples; Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia; Naval Support Activity Naples; Task Force 69; Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station; U.S. Naval Hospital Naples; and the U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band.

“It’s always a pleasure to hear what the admiral has to say, and for him to come here and give us some words of wisdom, it just brings everything together,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Patrick Parigi, a culinary specialist from Allied Joint Force Command. “It is an honor to be the junior sailor of the quarter, I just want to keep on working hard and hopefully get to the next step, the junior sailor of the year.”

The USO is a non-profit, congressionally-chartered private organization that relies on contributions of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities.
