PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Myles Deering, the Oklahoma Adjutant General, visited the soldiers of 1st Battalion, 279th Infantry Regiment, Task Force Creek, at Forward Operating Base Goode in Paktya province, Afghanistan, Oct. 14.
Accompanying Deering was Command Sgt. Maj. Steve Jensen, the Oklahoma National Guard sergeant major.
During his visit, Deering ate lunch with several of the junior officers of TF Creek; spoke with leadership on the future of the Oklahoma Army National Guard and the U.S. Army as a whole and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge to several soldiers. The badge is awarded for being involved in direct combat with enemy forces.
“You have learned some lessons the hard way. You have to remember those lessons and take them back with you as you progress in your career,” said Deering. “Thank you for all you do. I’m proud of you guys and the folks back home are very proud of you as well.”
Deering was then given a quick tour of the base and a short briefing on the unit’s deployment thus far.
“Gen. Deering has a long and distinguished history with the 45th [Infantry Brigade Combat Team]” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Chuck Booze, of Norman, Okla., TF Creek commander. “Having him here today is an honor.”
Deering commanded the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, TF Creek’s parent unit, during its 2008 deployment to Iraq.
Task Force Creek is based out of Sand Springs, Okla., with a majority of the soldiers coming from Tulsa and the surrounding areas.
