SAN FRANCISCO - Members of the United States Park Service thanked Marines and sailors for the hours they spent helping restore parks to their original state Oct 8.
The Marines and sailors have been part of an effort to help restore habitats in five areas for the last two days.
“Its really good to have all the guys out here,” said Alex C. Hooker, program manager for the San Francisco region of the Park Stewardship Program. “They’re working really hard, putting a great name on the military.”
Service members were thanked for help they were willing to give to parks in the area.
“I love it. As soon as I found out that’s what we are doing, I made sure I got in the front of the volunteer line,” said Lance Cpl. Thomas B. Taylor, an amphibious assault crewman with 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion.
The Marines completed more work than the average group, according to Hooker.
“They’ve blown this out of the water,” said Hooker. “I couldn’t have asked for more work from these guys.”
Marines and sailors were happy to help in a park that requires local participation to keep all the native plants and animals healthy.
“The National Park system, especially this park, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, relies heavily on volunteer support to make all these habitat restoration projects happen,” said Hooker.
San Francisco Fleet Week is only seven days, but the Marines and sailors wish they could have more opportunities to help.
“I’d do it again,” said Thomas, 29. “If I had a chance, I’d put more time into it.”
