    KABUL, Afghanistan — A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed multiple insurgents during a security operation in search of a Haqqani network leader in Dzadran district, Paktiya province.

    The network leader operates along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, between Khost and Paktiya provinces, and is responsible for facilitating weapons and coordinating attacks against Afghan forces.

    The security force encountered several armed insurgents during the operation, assessing an immediate threat, the security force engaged, killing the individuals.

    Multiple suspected insurgents were detained and several weapons confiscated during the operation.

    In other International Security Assistance Force news throughout Afghanistan:

    North

    A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed one insurgent during an operation in search of a Taliban facilitator in Kunduz district, Kunduz province, who planned and participated in attacks against Afghan forces. As the Afghan-led security force approached the building, an armed insurgent attempted to engage the force and was killed. Numerous suspected insurgents were detained and a homemade bomb making facility was destroyed during the operation.

    In Chahar Bolak district, Balkh province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator during an operation. The facilitator managed financing for insurgent activity and planned and conducted attacks against Afghan forces in the Balkh province.

    South

    In the Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in search of a Taliban leader who is directly responsible for the movement of suicide bombers and explosives throughout Kandahar province. He also relays guidance from senior Taliban leaders to fighters throughout the region. The security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during the operation.

    In a separate operation, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader during a security operation in Panjwa’i district. The leader facilitated narcotics and funds for insurgent activity throughout both the northern Helmand and western Kandahar provinces, and transported chemicals used to construct roadside bombs for attacks in the region. The security force detained one additional suspected insurgent during the operation.

    In Arghandab district, Kandahar province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache consisting 17 grenades and one rocket propelled grenade. All weapons were safely destroyed by security forces.

    A coalition security force discovered a weapons cache in Maiwand district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The cache consisted 1984 pounds (900 kilograms) of homemade explosive material. The items were confiscated for safe destruction at a later date.

    In Kandahar district, Kandahar province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache consisting of three 107 mm rockets, two 60 mm mortar rounds and one 122 mm booster section. All items were safely destroyed by security forces.

    East

    A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province. The leader coordinates roadside bomb and rocket attacks against Afghan forces. The security force confiscated a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and detained multiple suspected insurgents during the operation.
