MARINE CORPS AIR STATION FUTENMA, Japan - Marine Corps Community Services Athletics hosted its annual Futenma Athletic Triathlon Sept. 25 on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

Approximately 130 participants competed in the race comprised of a 5-kilometer run, 16.5-kilometer bike ride and a 200-meter swim.

“The course was laid out really well,” said Stephen P. Armes, who took second-place overall and is the father of the triathlon winner. “The hardest part though was dealing with elements like the wind.”
Armes, who raced alongside his two sons, has made racing a family event.

“We train as a family,” he said. “We all train every day and sometimes twice a day. We usually try and swim 10,000 to 15,000 meters a week as well as run 25 to 35 miles a week and bike for at least seven hours. The important thing is not as much training as it is just maintaining an active lifestyle.”

Though we go to races as a family, we will end up splitting up during the race, said Ryan W. Armes, a seventh-grader at Ryukyu Middle School and the youngest of the Armes competitors.

“My brother and father end up hanging together, and I just try my best and hope to reach their speed one day,” said Ryan.

He and his older brother Eric both train daily with the Kubasaki High School cross-country team and have to balance training, school and a social life.

“Training for events like a triathlon is more mental,” said Eric, a freshman at Kubasaki High School. “You have to balance your obligations. For me it is trying to balance cross-country training and keeping my grades up in school.”

Eric and his father Stephen raced together pacing each other until the very end, when Eric finished first with his father not too far behind, placing second overall.

“Events like the Futenma Triathlon help you gauge where you are on a physical scale,” said the senior Armes. “Races like this help you set new goals for the future and determine your fitness level.”
