    2d Cavalry Regiment

VILSECK, Germany – Troopers from FIRES Squadron of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment gathered alongside their counterparts from the 2nd Air Operations Support Squadron and the 19th Battlefield Coordination Detachment to discuss lessons learned from their recent deployment to Afghanistan during the first ever FIRES Support Conference held Sept. 7 at Rose Barracks. Distinguished guests for the event included Col. Stephen Maranian, commander of 19th BCD; Maj. Gen. James C. Boozer, the deputy commanding general of U.S. Army Europe; Col. Keith Barclay, the 2CR regimental commander.

“We figured we would bring all fire supporters together to share lessons learned from the last deployment and carve a path for future training within the 2nd Cavalry Regiment,” said FIRES Squadron commander, Lt. Col. Anthony Lugo, during his opening remarks. Lugo went on to stress the focus of the conference which was to bring all the elements involved in fire missions together to discuss their experiences in the field and share ideas that will help build towards the future as the squadron prepares to enter their Combined Arms Maneuver phase of training in 2012.

Guest speakers for the afternoon included Lt. Col. David Sink, commander of the Vampire Team from the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany. The Vampires are the observer controllers which train both field artillery units and their multinational partners for deployments. Sink talked about fire support trends and the challenges which units face at a Battery level.

Boozer stressed the importance of the training phase of artillery operations is to the regiment’s overall mission readiness.

“You all know the environment we are in,” he said. “This world is changing faster than anyone can keep up with. You need to be ready, because you never know when you will get the call.”

Boozer urged the Dragoons to focus hard on the development of their upcoming training program and pay close attention to the core fundamentals.

“The training blocks you will put in place are very important. Take your time and do it right,” Boozer said. “It’s all about move, shoot and communicate. That is the business you are in.”
