MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan – Four Navy Information Operations Command sailors stationed here completed a one-hour, non-stop run for local charity, Sep. 1.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Ramsey Farrington, Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew Jefferson, Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Davis and Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert Meier completed the one-hour run on board Misawa Air Base to raise money for the graduates at the local Akebono Orphanage.

The four sailors had talked about doing something to raise money for the orphanage, but it was Farrington who gave legs to the idea.

“I was inspired by a similar event last year that involved biking,” he said. “I love to run, so that’s where I started.”

Farrington asked his NIOC co-workers to join him, and Jefferson, Davis, and Meier answered the call.

Davis said the choice to take part in the event was easy.

“I love pushing my body to the limit. The way I see it, raising some money to help others while doing something I love was an easy task for me,” he said. “I gave everything I had for Akebono orphans; I hope it helps them in their future.”

Ultimately, the four sailors traveled 32.25 miles and raised more than $1,000 for their cause. NIOC Misawa will now donate the money to the Akebono Orphanage’s high school graduates, who will utilize it as they move out of the facility and set out on their own.

For more than 30 years, NIOC Misawa and the Akebono Orphanage have shared a strong relationship and have taken part in numerous cultural exchanges and development opportunities.
