MARQUETE, Kan. - The Kansas City District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin increasing releases from Milford, Tuttle Creek and Perry lakes Aug. 31.
The lakes have been making minimal releases since mid-June to mitigate flooding conditions on the Missouri River downstream.
Currently, Milford Lake is 13.8 feet higher than normal pool, while Tuttle Creek Lake is 17.25 feet high, and Perry Lake is 6.8 feet higher than normal pool. The district will begin releasing 1,500 cfs from Milford Lake, 1,000 cfs from Tuttle Creek Lake and 200 cfs from Perry Lake. The releases should slow pool rises at the lakes and could lower pool levels if conditions are dry.
The additional water in the Kansas River should not have a significant effect on Missouri River flooding. The Missouri River stages are declining rapidly as the releases upstream from Gavins Point reservoir have been stepped down. The Kansas City District believes the Missouri River stages will continue to decline even with the additional water from the three Kansas Basin lakes.
