INDIANAPOLIS - Maj. Gen.l R. Martin Umbarger, the adjutant general of Indiana, has ordered the stand down of the approximately 1,000 Indiana National Guard soldiers activated in support of Hurricane Irene relief efforts.
The prepositioning of forces outside the affected area is an improved approach to disaster response.
The Indiana Army National Guard's initiative to take part in Ground Task Force 3, and provide defense support to civil authorities to states affected by Hurricane Irene to prevent loss of life and human suffering, was cancelled as an assessment of the hurricane damage revealed the required response was within the capabilities of the affected states.
The Indiana Guard remains ready to provide aid to our sister states in the event of natural or man-made incidents. The ability to quickly, safely, and efficiently provide a response force package to aid our neighbors has been proven over the last 24 hours.
Indiana National Guard troops are expected to be released over the next 24 hours.
