KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – The 25th Naval Construction Regiment, Task Force Overlord, transitioned to the 30th NCR, Task Force Forager, during a transfer of authority ceremony, Aug. 16, 2011, on Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan.
The 25th NCR, from Gulfport, Miss., served as the command and control element for Task Force Overlord, which was responsible for construction engineering and engineering support in Southern, Southwestern and Western Afghanistan.
The TOA’s officiating officer, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, commended the task force for its many successes during its 7-month deployment.
“Task Force Overlord proved the true power of the military is the combined efforts of all the services,” he said. “You should be extremely proud of your accomplishments.”
Referencing the 25th NCR’s World War II history, Scaparrotti told the sailors of the 25th NCR they lived up to their legacy.
“Just as your predecessors in World War II played an instrumental role in the invasion of Normandy, you too have accomplished great things which will be remembered for years to come.”
Task Force Overlord and the 25th NCR commodore, U.S. Navy Capt. Allan M. Stratman, said the task force did an amazing job supporting the mission in Afghanistan and the Afghan people.
“It doesn’t get any better than leading this incredible group of engineers, and I’m really going to miss it.”
Stratman said Task Force Overlord was a success because of the great Army, Navy and Air Force engineers from the 10 units supporting its mission. During its deployment to Afghanistan, soldiers, sailors and airmen of the task force conducted road building and repair, and new construction of forward operating bases and security points.
Task Force Overlord also dug water wells which provided clean water for Afghan villages, placed and repaired bridges and partnered with Afghan military engineers to aid in the smooth transition to Afghan leadership.
U.S. Navy Capt. Bret J. Muilenburg Task Force Forager and the 30th NCR commodore said his team was honored to take over such an important mission.
“To the units of Task Force Forager, you are an impressive team,” said Muilenburg. “30 NCR feels a great pride in joining you in this fight and a great obligation to ensure strong leadership in our Task Force.”
The 30th NCR, from Port Hueneme, Calif., was previously deployed to Afghanistan from August 2009 to February 2010. The regiment is made up of approximately 90 U.S. Navy Seabees and support staff and will be deployed to Kandahar Airfield until early 2012.
