    Additional information:

"National Spirit of '45 Day," is observed on the second Sunday in every August, coinciding with Aug. 14, 1945, the day President Truman announced that World War II was over and America assumed the leadership for rebuilding the postwar world. In conjunction with "National Spirit of '45 Day," the Watervliet Arsenal Museum has invited Lt. Col. (retired) Paul Fanning to talk about tank warfare in Europe. Fanning has loaned the museum nearly 20 World War II dioramas which are currently on display.

The Tank Warfare presentation will take place, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., and again at 1:30 p.m. After Paul's talk, the museum curator, Bob Pfeil, will give a guided tour of the museum. Admission is free and all adults will be required to show photo identification (drivers license or passport) to the guards prior to entering the arsenal. Photos may only be taken inside the museum.

Retired Lt. Col. Paul Fanning served 34 years in the New York National Guard and ended his career as the state public affairs officer in July 2011. He was born in Watervliet, grew up in Clifton Park and is a Siena College graduate. He was commissioned as an armor officer in 1977 through Siena's Army ROTC program and served in the Albany and Hoosick Falls-based 1st Battalion, 210th Armor from 1978 to 1982 as a platoon leader, executive officer and detachment commander.

He served most of his Guard career as a public affairs officer in a variety of assignments to include the Headquarters, 42nd Infantry Division and with New York's 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Afghanistan in 2008 as the Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix VII public affairs officer.

Over the years he has worked with numerous news organizations and documentary teams covering the Guard during training, state emergencies and combat operations overseas. He maintained his affiliation as an Armor officer and has used his combined background and skills for frequent guest speaker opportunities throughout the state.

He has been building models and dioramas for display purposes and to support his public presentations since the mid 1980s. Many have received awards at numerous hobby shows in New York, New Jersey and Maryland.
