GALVESTON, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract, July 26, to Lecon Inc., a HUBZone contractor, in the amount of $5,634,560 for levee construction at the Houston Ship Channel’s east and west Clinton Placement Area.
Work will consist of raising levees and replacing spill boxes at the project site.
“This project will allow the middle and upper bayou portion of the Houston Ship Channel to have a placement area with enough capacity to last for several dredging cycles,” said Karl Brown, an operations manager with USACE Galveston District. “Additionally, this work will allow us to have the ability to place and hold dredged material in a safe and efficient way following operations in the channel.”
According to Brown, there may be some slight traffic interruptions along Mercury Drive in the cities of Galena Park and Jacinto City as a result of contractors using this road to get to the project site.
“We apologize for the inconvenience these minor interruptions may cause,” said Brown. “We are committed to completing this project with the most minimal disruptions as possible.”
Work is scheduled to begin in September 2011 and is expected to be completed by March 2013.
USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
