GALVESTON, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract, July 28, to King Fisher Marine Service LP in the amount of $2,673,800 to dredge in the Sabine-Neches Waterway, in Jefferson County, Texas, and in the Sabine Pass Channel located in Cameron Parish, La.

The contractor will remove approximately 1.4 million cubic yards of shoal material from the channels, ensuring the waterways remain open for navigation.

“The dredging will address areas where shoaling has occurred to enable crude oil tankers as well as the liquefied natural gas vessels to navigate through these waterways rather than being diverted to other ports,” said Joe Hrametz, Chief of the Operations Division at USACE Galveston District. “The less these ships have to travel, the lower their transportation costs will be which is important for both the producer and consumer in these difficult economic times.”

According to Hrametz, the Corps received a competitive price from the low bidder which will enable the district to fund additional options in the Sabine-Neches Canal.

Work is scheduled to begin August 2011 and is expected to be completed by January 2012.
