BASRAH, Iraq – Throughout the majority of the deployment, soldiers of Company C. ‘Crazyhorse’, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division have participated in the weekly Humanitarian Aid program implemented by Stability Transition Team Enforcer.

This program is considered one of the most important tasks performed by those stationed at the Joint Security Station, Basrah Operation Command. It is a joint effort executed by three separate units who join together weekly to successfully complete this benevolent task.

The stability transition team, soldiers of Company C and the Iraqi Police provide much needed humanitarian aid to less the fortunate families within Basrah.

This weekly program has been one of the primary focuses of the STT. Every Sunday, the IP travel to the BaOC from the Ministry of Iraq with approximately eight policemen and meet up with Maj. Bill Mott, the STT Deputy Team Chief. Mott then coordinates with the Crazyhorse soldiers to provide assistance with the food drop.

The number of soldiers usually matches the number of IP; this is important because it demonstrates that the work is distributed equally between the two forces.

Once assembled, the two units work together and construct the humanitarian aid food bags. Approximately 25 bags are made with each one comprising of beans, rice, sun flour oil, powdered milk, tea, sugar, lentils and tomato paste.

Once the bags are constructed, they are stored until the following Iraqi Police visit, which occurs on Wednesday. The purpose of this visit is to simply pick up the 25 bags of humanitarian aid, along with 25 large bags of flour. The IP then depart to distribute the goods to the Iraqi families who are in need.

This program serves several purposes, the most important being it supplies necessities to the less fortunate. It also shows that Iraqi and American forces work well together and have a solid relationship. Lastly, it portrays the Iraqi Police in a very positive light, showing they have concern for their people and have the ability to provide aid to those in need.

“It is an excellent opportunity for the joint forces of the BaOC to show they really do care about the citizens of Basrah, the HA program is a fantastic idea,” said Sgt. Brett Campa, a native of Vale, N.C.

The humanitarian aid program has greatly improved conditions within Basrah and helps build community relations, which is a vital characteristic of any police force.
