HERAT PROVINCE, Afghanistan – U.S. special operations forces medical staff conducted an ultrasound class for Afghan National Army doctors at the Zafar ANA hospital, Herat province, June 4.
Special operations forces medical officers provided instruction and hands-on guidance on using linear and abdominal ultrasound machines for reading arterial blood flow and analyzing symptoms in the body to the ANA medical team.
The primary block of instruction was the focused assessment with sonography for trauma exam, a technique U.S. physicians utilize to check for internal bleeding in trauma patients. ANA physicians also learned how to operate ultrasound machines to look for blood flow and fractures.
The ANA volunteered two soldiers to serve as demonstrators for ultrasound techniques, providing visual and hands-on instruction necessary to maximize the doctor’s comprehension of the machines.
The ANA hospital commander, Col. Azim, attended and expressed his satisfaction with the training USSOF provided. He stated the training would increase the medical facility’s capabilities along with the skill set of his doctors.
The SOF medical officer quickly responded to questions from the ANA doctors about using the ultrasound and treating advanced patients.
“It went well,” said the SOF medical officer. “Hopefully, I was able to give them some new tools to use.”
