A group of military leaders visited soldiers assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division during the Network Integration Evaluation event on White Sands Missile Range N.M., June 28.

The visit was to observe unit operations and to see some of the systems under test at the Mountain Village site as well as other areas at WSMR. The purpose of the visit was to give the visiting leaders a better understanding of what the systems do, their capabilities and the way the soldiers work with these systems on a daily basis.

Many of the leaders had questions and were receptive to the feedback the soldiers were giving them in the short amount of time they had during the visit.

Soldiers assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment, 2/1 AD were well prepared for this event. They knew the systems, the capabilities and the pros and cons. The soldiers were even the demonstrators for the equipment being evaluated.

Army Vice Chief of Staff, Gen. Peter W. Chiarelli, a guest during the visit, spoke to the soldiers and commended them on the great job they were doing and to continue their fine work during the rest of the NIE.

The visitors had the opportunity to go inside a Multipurpose All Terrain Vehicle and fire its weapon.

The green tent was another place visited.

“The green tent is our Command Post, that’s where we have are command and control and can relay our information between the units,” said Staff Sgt. Nathaniel R. Meyer, the operations sergeant for Company A.

Within the tent there were different systems. One of those systems is the Network Integration Kit.

“The NIK utilities remote work station is a data transfer device that gives us the ability to transfer over instantaneous chat similar to Yahoo Messenger as well as the ability to send and receive files up to 75 megabytes in a format that doesn't clutter the other net,” said Sgt. David C. Johnson, battle sergeant with Company A. “It also allows me to have group chat, to allow everyone in the chat room to communicate.”

“Some of these systems need refinement,” said Cpt. Scott C. Dewitt, commander of Company A. “Other systems that were tested last year have been refined and have shown major improvements.”

“This event has gone very well,” said Dewitt. “From the point we started six weeks ago, we never put this together in a collective manner and we are now at the stage where we can operate with it and better understand how to employ it.”
