FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. – On June 14, the Army’s 236th Birthday got off to a running start at Fort Hunter Liggett, Calf. The days’ celebrations started with an emphasis on Army fitness with a Walk Bike Run event held with the rising sun in the picturesque hills around the Cantonment area.
No Army can go very far without good food; the next event was at the dining facility where the staff prepared a luncheon feast of barbecued T- bone steaks, ribs and stuffed salmon. The Soldiers had the added benefit of lunch being served by the Garrison Command Staff.
Who loves a birthday party more than children? The preschool class from the post Multi Age Facility got in to the action the day before when they assisted Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Newman in making birthday cards for the Army, these cards were presented at the cake and ice cream reception following lunch at the Army Community Services office. The cutting of the cake was assisted by the oldest and the youngest soldiers in attendance.
”The families, know most of all, the sacrifices that are faced everyday and we thank them for those sacrifices,” said the Garrison Commander Col. James Suriano, during the reception thanking the Army families for their support.
The following day pre-school children got in to the action again with an impromptu Happy Birthday parade where they marched through the halls and offices of the Garrison Headquarters singing "Happy Birthday" to the Army waving flags blowing horns and beating drums. The Army was created by the Continental Congress June 14, 1775, with George Washington as its Commander. The Army birthday is celebrated to honor the spirit of the Army, the Army families and to honor the nation it serves.
