KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Afghan national security forces, in partnership with International Security Assistance Forces, celebrated the opening of a new soccer field 8 June, by holding a soccer match in sub district one of Kandahar City.

The project was spearheaded by 1st Special Troops Battalion, Task Force "Phoenix," 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, who worked with senior district officials to provide soccer balls, nets and a safe place to hold future matches.

The soccer field was one of many projects headed by TF Phoenix in their reconstruction efforts to improve quality of life, safety and security for residents of Kandahar City.

Kandahar City mayor, Haider Hamedi, in partnership with TF "Phoenix" commander, Lt. Col. Christopher Beck, attended the ceremony, during which they interacted with local residents and then cut the ceremonial ribbon, signifying the official opening of the soccer field.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony, two of Kandahar City’s rival soccer teams played the very first game on the new fields while ANSF and ISAF service members passed out flyers, bracelets and new soccer balls to residents of the area.

The fields, which are located in the "Old Corps" area of Kandahar City, will now be available to all residents of the area to enjoy on a permanent basis.
