The 12th Marine Corps District volleyball team defeated the Recruit Administration Branch June 7 in a game at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego’s field house.
Twelfth District got an early start with an eight point lead and kept a strong defense.
“We thought we weren’t going to be as competitive,” said Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Crespo, logistics chief, 12th District. “It was a confidence booster,” he added about winning the first game. “We were more confident about going into the second game.”
The first game ended 25-16, giving 12th District a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three format.
The teams switched sides giving RAB the chance to serve first. The second game started with a back and forth battle, neither team able to dominate. It wasn’t long before 12th District once again was able to pull away and maintain a small lead against RAB.
The second game, while closer than the first, came to a close with a score of 25-21, giving 12th District an early win without forcing a third game.
“We did better than last time, so we are improving,” said Sgt. Maj. Wayne Pedersen, Support Battalion a player for RAB. “We’re out here to have a bit of fun.”
The 12th District team prepares for each game by practicing once a week at the MCRD boathouse’s sand courts. The win on June 7brings their current record to 4-1, and are preparing for the CG Cup volleyball playoffs slated to begin June 22.
Commanding General Cup intramural sports are open to everyone aboard the depot, including families.
