Story by Tech. Sgt. Adrienne Brammer

    NATO Training Mission Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Twenty-six Afghan national police graduated to the rank of second lieutenant at the Police Training Center at Camp Nathan Smith in Kandahar May 19. This is the first crop of students to complete the new officer candidate course outside Kabul.

The six-month course began with a military skills phase that covered weapons training, drill, and first aid. It was followed up with a professional phase that included criminal investigation techniques, emergency response procedures, leadership and management principles.

The officer candidate course takes basic policing principles to a higher level and includes aspects such as planning exercises and community policing. These skills are required for a police officer's role in an environment characterized by insurgency.

The class was the final mentoring responsibility of the Canadian civilian police team since the training center transferred to NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan from the Canadian government on April 18.

Of the 26 graduates, eight will assume duty in Uruzgan province and the remaining officers will report to Kandahar City.
