GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan – One hundred sixty nine students are in the final stages of a six-week basic police course at the Ghazni Troop Sustainment Site Police Academy, Forward Operating Base Ghazni, Afghanistan.

Afghan and Polish instructors began a field training exercise with the students May 11.

“Today we are conducting a field training exercise with all our students. We check what they learned from the last five weeks they spent here” said Polish Military Police Maj. Mateusz Dadal, Ghazni TSS Police Academy adviser.

Students divided into small groups and conducted practical exercises where instructors watched as students searched for mines and booby traps, set up checkpoints, evacuated injured people, and handcuffed and cleared buildings.

The students also attended weapons qualification classes which included weapon structure, cleaning, disassembling and reassembling weapons. After passing their evaluation, students went to the firing range.

Afghan and Polish instructors introduced several new elements to the training.

“This edition is much better than previous classes, and it gives a lot of benefits for our students,” said Afghan National Police Maj. Rajab Ali Hamidi, Ghazni Police Provincial Headquarters officer, who observed the students’ practical training.

Hamidi said he was very pleased to see the improvised explosive device training.

“This is the biggest threat to the local population,” said Hamidi. “Policemen really need this kind of training, and it brings better and better results with each class.”

The academy’s commandant said he believes the training will help the students be good policemen.

“It is really very hard and demanding training but it is necessary to do,” said Afghan National Police Capt. Ramazan Ali, Ghazni TSS Police Academy commandant. “The course is very intensive and they received a great number of exercises.”
