FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. – Fort Leonard Wood and the U.S. Army Engineer School held a change-of-responsibility ceremony at 9:30 a.m. May 6 at the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence Plaza.

Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Wells passed the responsibilities for the USAES regimental command sergeant major to Command Sgt. Maj. Terrence Murphy.

Wells has taken over the duties of MSCoE command sergeant major at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Murphy joins USAES with nearly 28 years of military experience and familiarity of Fort Leonard Wood through previous assignments.

Brig. Gen. Bryan Watson, commandant of the U.S. Army Engineer School addressed leaders, soldiers, civilian employees and family members who were in attendance about the significance of the position of regimental command sergeant major, and the men who fill the position.

Watson said, “The command sergeant major has responsibility for the performance, training, appearance, and conduct of military personnel. In addition, this person must remain calm, unequivocally accurate, and never waver.”

Watson added that the command sergeant major must exhibit courage under fire, operational savvy, and insight into the soul of soldiers.

“The command sergeant major IS the standard,” Watson said.

He further stated, “As Army formations become more complex we have learned that the role of command sergeant major takes an extraordinary Soldier. There are no greater persons to exemplify this role than Command Sgt. Maj. Wells and Command Sgt. Maj. Murphy—we are in good hands.”

Wells thanked his family for “hanging tough” through multiple moves and deployments, and he also thanked the community for supporting engineer efforts especially during the current war.

Murphy commented that it is a great day to be an engineer, and he is ready to take on the role of 16th command sergeant major for the Engineer school and regiment. Murphy also thanked his family for their continued support.
