PAKTIKA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The provincial government distributed more than 40,000 Pashtu textbooks to schools in five districts as part of a plan to re-establish and build the education program within Paktika province, April 8 through May 3.

Dr. Ehsanullah, the provincial director of education started the initiative for the new school year. He worked with Task Force Currahee, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division’s development team to assist with distributing the textbooks to several of the district centers.

The textbooks cover core curriculum including spelling, math, social studies, beginner dari, handwriting, life skills and Islamic studies.

“The shadow government and continuous insurgent threat in Warmami and Bermal Districts had not allowed schools in those districts for over four years,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Anthony Jones, the non-lethal effects sergeant major with TF Currahee and native of Philadelphia. “We assisted the provincial government with moving the books to be distributed to outlying areas where schools were hard to reach based on terrain or security issues.”

After the textbooks were delivered to the sub-governors of Jani Khel, Bermal, Wazi Khwah, Mata Khan and Sar Hawza, the Afghan uniformed police escorted the district sub-governors as they distributed the books to the children and schools within their own districts.

Education is important to Paktika, said a spokesman from the Paktika Province governor’s office. With new schools being opened, classes have children and adults going there to learn together.

It took four weeks to deliver all the books, but more than 5,000 Afghan children in Paktika province now have school books for the new school year.
