HOUSTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract April 27 to PSA Constructors Inc., an 8(a) small business, in the amount of $300,190 for the preparation of an environmental assessment for the Addicks and Barker Dam Safety Modification Study in Fort Bend and Harris counties, Texas. Environmental assessment work began April 29.

Constructed in the 1940s, the Addicks and Barker dams and reservoirs are flood damage reduction projects designed to prevent downstream flooding of Buffalo Bayou in the City of Houston. The environmental assessment will identify environmental impacts and provide documentation of those impacts regarding the proposed long-term structural repairs which will be listed in a Dam Safety Modification Study and disclosed to the public.

“All Corps projects are evaluated for environmental impacts as part of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969,” said Jerry Androy, a staff archeologist with USACE Galveston. “NEPA provides the framework for the identification of environmental impacts, the coordination of these impacts with other state and federal agencies and the public, and consideration of those impacts in the decision-making process for federal projects.”

According to Androy, an environmental assessment ensures all appropriate resources have been identified and considered regarding project impacts and makes certain proposed projects are in compliance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations.
