District Governor inaugurates school opening in eastern Kandahar
MARUF DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Abdul Samat Durrani, Maruf District governor, hosted more than 120 Afghan citizens for the inauguration of a newly-opened school in eastern Kandahar province’s Maruf District, April 10.
The governor invited the U.S. Special Forces team who were working in the district to attend the event. Their efforts to improve security in the area made it possible to increase the number of education centers for the local children.
"If a person goes to school, he will respect his parents and his community," Durrani said. "An educated man will know about human rights and he will learn about humility. These are things we need to be teaching in Maruf."
The school will now service as the location for educating more than 250 area boys and girls, said a Special Operations Task Force – South team leader working in Maruf District.
The Afghan Ministry of Education selected Maruf’s region as the location for 12 new schools in Kandahar province.
This newly-built school is the first among those 12, and its location allows it to touch hundreds of families, the team leader explained.
“It was constructed, supplied, and staffed completely by the [Ministry of Education],” he added.
Prior to this year, there had been no schools in Maruf since the Taliban closed them nearly 15 years ago.
