FARGO, N.D. — Children of North Dakota Air National Guardsmen will get a glimpse of what life is like for their parents and other citizen-Airmen during Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day on Thursday. The day is observed nationally to give children an opportunity to explore life choices.
About 40 children between ages 8 and 18 toured the North Dakota Air National Guard base in Fargo last year, and 50 are expected this year. Nationwide, more than 35 million youths tour more than 3 million workplaces as part of the program.
The day will begin at 7:30 a.m. with children shadowing their parents at work. The group will come together at 9 a.m. for formal introductions before beginning a tour of the base that will encompass key areas. Youths will learn about recruiters’ mission to bring new members into the National Guard and the jobs Security Forces personnel do to maintain base security. Next, they will tour the multimedia studio and learn about the role public affairs personnel play in telling the National Guard story. Next, they’ll be able to prepare lunch with the Services Flight and serve their parents before joining them for lunch at the 119th Wing dining facility. After lunch, the group will tour the Wing’s fire department, which is responsible for emergency calls at Hector International Airport. Next, they’ll visit the hangar and see the mission of C-21 pilots and crew members. The day will end with a visit to the office of Col. Rick Gibney, 119th Wing commander.
