HERAT, Afghanistan – A Red Platoon, Bulldog Troop medic treated a 2-year-old burn victim at Combat Outpost Metro, Bala Murghab District, Badghis province, Afghanistan, April 2.

Yovas Aduraman’s uncle approached COP Metro with Adurman in his arms seeking medical care for what U.S. Army Spc. Kellen West, Red Platoon medic from 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, learned was a severely burnt hand.

Aduraman also had minor burns on his stomach.

“We see many child burn victims here,” said West, who hails from Loomis, Calif. “We see a few children a week with injuries as common as burns from simple things like spilling Chai Tea on themselves, to complex injuries like severed limbs or severely burnt children, like this one.”

West couldn’t be certain whether or not the child would be able to keep his limb as the burn was very severe, and was two days old.

Army Staff Sgt. Ray Mundo, a Red Platoon scout, assisted West in treating the injuries.

Meanwhile, Army 1st Lt. Joseph Law, Red Platoon leader, contacted his Afghan National Army counterparts to transport Aduraman from COP Metro to nearby Forward Operating Base Todd, where he could receive in-depth treatment.

“I dressed the wound the best I could and will now let the folks at FOB Todd do their job, and they are very good at it,” said West. “Treating injured locals is a very important job, it lets them know that we really are a part of this community.”
