FORT KNOX, Ky. – The 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) hosted command teams from its subordinate units, March 23-24 for a commander’s conference at Fort Knox’s Waybur Theater.
The conference allowed the 3d ESC to engage its subordinate commanders and senior enlisted advisors face to face on issues and challenges facing the command.
Attending the conference were command teams from the 7th Sustainment Brigade at Fort Eustis, Va., the 49th Quartermaster Group at Fort Lee, Va., and the 233rd Transportation Company from Fort Knox.
The commander’s conference sought to improve the relationships between the 3d ESC and its subordinate units.
The commander’s conference included several unique briefings to include deployed theater overviews, lessons learned sessions, commander updates and sessions on supporting the deployers which included a briefing by Col. Greg Akin, commander of the 404th Army Field Support Brigade and husband of Brig. Gen. Robin Akin, the 3d ESC’s commanding general.
Perhaps one of the more popular briefings was given by Staff Sgt. Mike Jeffrey, who’s not a commander or senior enlisted advisor, but a wounded warrior now stationed at Fort Knox’s Warrior Transition Unit.
Jeffrey, who was once a member of the 1st Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment when it was located at Fort Knox, explained his story of how he was wounded and how he’s benefited from the WTU.
“I initially fought hard against going to the WTU. The WTU had a stigma that I wanted no part of,” said Jeffrey. “I always thought that that’s where every unit in the Army sent their garbage and forgot about them.”
But since reporting to the WTU, Jeffrey explained to the command teams that he has certainly reversed his stance. As a member of the WTU, Jeffrey has been able to receive all the necessary assistance and treatments necessary to overcome his injury. Jeffrey said that he wanted to get the word out to units that there may be soldiers within their ranks with hidden wounds and that the WTU is there to help, not hurt them.
“Coming to Fort Knox has been the best thing that has happened to me,” said Jeffrey. “Even with myself kicking and screaming upon arrival, getting assigned to the WTU was the best fight that I didn’t win.”
The 3d ESC capped off the commander’s conference with a ball at The Brown Hotel in Louisville, Ky. The ball gave those in attendance for the conference an opportunity to socialize in a relaxed setting while celebrating the 3d ESC’s 60th anniversary.
Overall, Akin said she was pleased with the week’s events and felt as if they were productive. She said she appreciated the opportunity to confer face to face with her subordinate command teams.
