MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan – Despite a 9.0-magnitude earthquake that impacted electrical service on Misawa Air Base, two new babies were born at the northern Japanese-located base, March 15.

In fact, since Japan's largest-ever recorded earthquake, March 11, six infants have been delivered at the base's 35th Medical Group Maternity Ward.

Running on generators that kicked on the moment power went out, the ward, like the rest of the clinic, remains fully operational.

However, running on generators does pose a few challenges for staff and patients, including an enhanced focus on conservation of resources, said 35th MDG Deputy Maternity Ward Flight Commander Maj. Tonya Mial.

"We've had to be mindful of what we have, and the things we use, like linens, towels, and water," she said. "We've also had to ask parents to bring in their own towels and blankets, things that we would normally provide.

"Our quality of service, however, has not been interrupted because of the earthquake," stressed Mial.

One new parent said she was grateful that the maternity ward was able to provide such top-notch service, even as the base and city worked to restore power and services to residents.

"After the earthquake we didn't have power, hot water, or heat at home," said Rugeana Moreno, wife of Airman 1st Class Hansel Moreno, from the 35th Maintenance Squadron. "It was scary, but when we came here we had those things, and it helped ease my fears.

Moreno, whose son Elijah was born, March, 15, added that things couldn't have gone better.

"My labor went smoothly and with out problems," added the San Diego native.

Staff Sgt. Ian Regan, from the 35th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, said he was glad that his wife, Kirstie, was able to have their daughter Brook on base.

"I always knew that the medical group here was good at keeping things going," said the native of Murfeesburo, Tenn. "So I had no doubt that things would be any different, even under these trying circumstances."
