FORT BELVOIR, Va. -- After retiring from the National Guard, Larry Strohecker was looking for his next career move. He found an opportunity through his local Department of Veterans Affairs office in Harrisburg, Pa., as a general supply specialist through the Non-Paid Work Experience program with DLA Distribution.
The program provides eligible veterans an opportunity to obtain training and practical job experience and allows veterans to enter temporary positions in federal, state or local agencies at no cost to the agency.
“The NPWE is a win-win situation for both the government agency and for the veteran with a service-connected disability,” said Kasey Kazakavich, Harrisburg Department of Veterans Affairs employment coordinator.
DLA Distribution benefits from the NPWE by obtaining high-quality workers at no expense and with no red tape and minimal paperwork. The veterans benefit by gaining practical job experience, establishing a work history outside of the military, gaining exposure to internal employment opportunities, and receiving a subsistence allowance from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Strohecker said he already sees the advantages of working with DLA Distribution to support warfighters.
“The training I have been receiving in the areas of logistics and storage are incredible,” he said. “The best part of my experience is the overall feeling of making a difference in providing the warfighter necessary supplies for support in theater.
“The most important part of everyone’s job at DLA Distribution is the support of the warfighter,” he continued. “No matter where I go or who I communicate with, the ultimate goal is geared towards providing superior support to our warfighters and customers.”
Strohecker said he hopes to continue working in the logistics field in some way to support warfighters after his tenure as part of the NPWE.
“The Veteran’s Non-Paid Work Experience Program is a great program for all parties involved,” Strohecker said. “The idea of a federal agency providing useful work experience and training is great. Times are tough, and we all need a helping hand.”
