MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Every Marine is a rifleman. This is one of the hallmarks of the Marine Corps. To reinforce this tradition, Camp Pendleton hosted an intramural pistol and rifle competition for any unit to enter.

Thirty Marines with 1st Marine Logistics Group participated in this 2-weeklong competition here, starting, Dec. 6.

“Unlike the regular course of fire qualification that every Marine is so fond of, this is a more competitive type of shooting,” said Sgt. Jason Rothgeb, a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialist with Combat Logistics Regiment 17, 1st MLG.

The competition consists of several categories, explained Rothgeb, 25, from Snoqualmie, Wash. For the first week of the competition, Marines practiced with their team to familiarize their members with the competition and course of fire.

Participants competed individually and as a team in both pistol and rifle categories.

On the final day, they competed as a team in the gunner competition. The half-mile course practices eliminating close range targets while moving as a fire team of four Marines.

The top 10 percent competitors received medals and the majority of the participants will compete in the Western Division Matches in March.

“This is a good opportunity for Marines to come out and learn how competitive shooting works,” said Rothgeb. “It’s basically a building block for the Division Matches in March.”

Sgt. Nicholas Russell, 24, from Milwaukee, Wis., military policeman, Military Police Company, CLR-17, 1st MLG, placed second in individual pistol and third in overall aggregate.

The CBRN Marines with 1st MLG took third place in team rifle, and 1st MLG’s MP team took second place in team pistol.

Weapon Field Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, placed first in the gunner competition and took several other awards.

As the competition ended, Marines with 1st MLG gained valuable experience in preparation for Western Division Matches in March.
