C2F 11-10PR Second Fleet’s Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Kicks Off Annual Fund Drive

NAVAL STATION NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES

    Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet

NORFOLK, Va. – Sailors and Marines at Commander, U.S. Second Fleet kicked off the annual Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society fund drive Feb. 28.

“Last year the Second Fleet staff donated $6,858, received $10,000 in loans and received a grant for a family which was very special,” said C2F Commander, Vice Adm. Daniel P. Holloway. “This year’s goal is 100 percent contact to educate and inform everyone so they have an opportunity to understand what NMCRS does while challenging those to donate if they can.”

Across the fleet in 2010, NMCRS had 99,854 cases and provided $49.9 million in financial assistance, a 9.2 percent case increase and a 5.2 percent increase in financial assistance over 2009. Locally there were 16,012 financial assistance cases in which $6.9 million was provided to military families. NMCRS offers a Visiting Nurse Program in which 46 Registered Nurses provided free hospital and home visits to 18,423 contacts with more than 1,100 families, providing resource information and emotional support to combat wounded and their families.

“All funds we receive through the NMCRS fund drive will go directly back to the sailors and Marines. This is a special opportunity for sailors and Marines to take care of each other through this program because anyone who needs some help during a tough time is entitled to receive help from NMCRS,” said Chief Petty Officer (SW) Martha MacKenzie, religious programs specialist, C2F’s NMCRS command representative.

This year’s fund drive is focused toward educating sailors and Marines on how to use the available resources through NMCRS because more often than not sailors and Marines don’t know about these programs and find themselves with a high interest loan.

“I am glad that we have a program geared to help sailors and Marines who could run into potential financial problems,” said Seaman Recruit Shaun Walker, information systems technician. “Knowing what I know about NMCRS, I will not go to outside sources for emergency loans.”

NMCRS provides interest-free loans, quick assist loans, and grants in emergency situations such as food and shelter, vehicle repairs, emergency transportation, funerals, medical and dental, and household set-up. For educational purposes they also provide need-based scholarships to service members and their families as well as interest-free loans. In addition, NMCRS offers budget counseling services, infant layettes, a thrift shop and food locker at some locations.

The NMCRS fund drive continues from March 1-31. For more information visit www.nmcrs.org.
