Afghans Graduate with New Skills
By Chief Petty Officer Jason Carter
KABUL, Afghanistan - The Vocational Training and Turkish Language Courses Program in Kabul graduated 141 more students Sunday.
The students received certificates for various courses including computer operating, Turkish language, carpet business, carpentry, repair of sewing machines and agriculture.
The Mayor of Kabul, Yunus Nawandish, spoke at the graduation and said he was happy to see Afghans gaining skills. Programs like this provide “capacity building” for Afghanistan, he said.
The program, organized by the Turkish army, has 36 Afghan instructors who have graduated 757 students since 2002.
Kabul’s Vital Literacy of Education Ministry General Director, Hameda Huma Nuristani, said this program pleases her. She quoted the Quran, stating that “learning knowledge is an obligation for all Muslims.”
Mohammed Zikir, who received a certificate from the Computer Operations course, said he was happy to attend the program.
“Yes, it is important, especially for the youth,” said Zikir.
He expressed how important programs like this are to the rebuilding of Afghanistan.
