    Marine Forces Reserve (MARFORRES)

SAN DIEGO -- Among all the 3rd Marine Air Wing installations on MCAS, Miramar there’s a Marine Forces Reserve, Reserve Support Unit stationed there as well.

The Reserve Support Unit at MCAS, Miramar is aimed towards providing administrative, logistical and operational support necessary for selected Marine Corps Installations West.

The RSU was established in 1984 to assist in providing support to Reserve units across the nation. Due to the closure of MCAS El Toro and Tustin, the RSU relocated to MCAS Miramar in 1998 and now serves under Marine Corps Installations West.

The RSU coordinates the hosting of Reserve units with appropriate station or tenant commands and maintains cognizance over the support and training rendered.

“Our purpose is to provide administrative, training and logistical support to Individual Mobilization Augment Marines and Marine Corps Reserve unit’s personnel training aboard Marine Corps bases and stations,” said Lt. Col. James “Skeeter” Fox, commanding officer for Reserve Support Unit, Air Stations West. “We accomplish this mission by supporting the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations West, Major General Anthony Jackson in all Reserve related to manpower and training aboard MCI West.”

“We have over 200 IMA Marines supporting active component units around the air stations, MCLB Barstow, and the MCI West Headquarters. We also assisted multiple SMCR units with training aboard MCAS Miramar and MCAS Camp Pendleton,” said Fox. “Specific examples are our IMA Ordnance Marines at MCAS Yuma who have enabled Col. Werth to pass Headquarters Marine Corps Aviation Safety Inspections that were troublesome due to lack of Active Component and civilian labor.”

The RSU completed a continuous process improvement project, utilizing Lean Six Sigma methodology, improving customer relations, service and processes related to timeliness of pay and travel claims, said Fox.

“We conducted in-house billet sponsor and IMA Marine training conferences to increase accountability and responsibility to the Marine Corp’s and IMA program to ensure the greatest stewardship of resources,” Fox said. “Our vision for the future is to include in our spaces an active component to Reserve component transition center, which will be the ultimate resource for information regarding the SelRes, tying in Prior Service Recruiting, AC/RC career counseling, and other agencies to ensure the health of the total force.”
